Renovated Metropole Hotel Back to Life

The famous Metropole Hotel in Mysore has regained its life after a long gap. The Hotel, where stayed the foreign tourists, who visited Mysore during the reign of the last two Maharajas and later, remained shutdown for a long time. The heritage hotel, after a facelift, was declared open on Feb.22 by the Chief Minister, Mr. S.M.Krishna.

The hotel was run by the Government of Mysore and later by the Government of Karnataka and was known for its service and food. It was the only hotel for a long time for accommodating foreign tourists. It was bee-hive tourist activity all those years, along with the other famous hotel at Krishnarajasagar, However, a few decades ago, the hotel was handed over to a private Bombay party. When the contract expired, the Government took over possession of the heritage building, but since then it remained shut and neglected.

There was a demand from certain quarters to convert it into a women’s college and also house an art gallery there. However, the Hotel, constructed during the time of Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, was ideally suited for a hotel or a guest house with a ballroom dance floor, which was also the spacious dining hall, and spacious rooms with excellent furniture. The Government finally decided to retain it as a hotel and handed it over to the Jungle Lodges & Resorts, run by the Government. The Jungle Lodges & Resorts is presently managing the Kabini lodges in H.D.Kote forest and the resort has become famous for its location.

The Krishnarajasagar Hotel, overlooking the beautiful Brindavan Gardens, will be taken up for renovation, soon. This hotel also, which was in the hands of the private party, has remained shut since its possession taken over by the State Government.
