Raja Rao of Nadabrahma Sabha is No More

Mysore’s popular music promoter, Mr. M.H.Raja Rao is no more. Mr. Rao, who was the Secretary of the famous Nadabrahma Sangeetha Sabha, passed away on April 1. He was ailing for some time. He leaves behind wife and four daughters.

All music lovers, patrons and musicians of Mysore and elsewhere know Mr. Raja Rao for his dedicated service as the Nadabrahma Sangeetha Sabha Secretary for over 35 years. Organising music and dance programmes regularly, Mr. Rao had brought many renowned musicians to Mysore and brought to limelight many youngsters. He was the chiefly responsible for the construction of the Sri Mysore Vasudevacharya Memorial Hall in the J.L.B.Road. Mobilising funds from the public and music lovers, Mr. Rao had taken keen interest in building a memorial hall in honour of the renowned musician-composer of Karnatak music, Mysore M.Vasudevacharya. Mr. Rao was also a good tennis player.

Mr. Rao was an ardent lover of music, both Karnatak and Hindustani. He had arranged concerts by many stalwarts in Mysore under his Sabha banner and brought the organization fame and popularity. More than the remuneration, many artistes considered it prestigious to perform under the auspices of the Nadabrahma Sabha. Though Mr. Rao was not a musician himself, he was repository of information on music. He could recall the Ragas of the various compositions and the names of its composers easily. Explain how one musican sang it differently from the other, enriching its singing. Just a mention of the name of a musician was enough to make him recall interesting episodes relating to his performances. He had over the period accumulated a number of interesting episodes. Mr. Raja Rao was also a lover of yesteryear’s songs of the famous Hindi films. He could easily narrate the whole song, whenever an occasion arose.

Mysore has lost a dedicated patron and promoter of classical music in the death of Mr. Rao.
