Annual Theatre Festival at Rangayana

After the success of 'Akka' last year, Rangayana is hosting the second annual theatre festival in Mysore from January 28 next.

The six-day national theatre festival is named 'Bahuroopi' this year. It will conclude on February 2. This year's festival will show-case traditional narratives, folk theatre and contemporary theatre productions which are inspired by narrative modes. Last year's 'Akka' laid emphasis on women's issues, while this year the emphasis will be on social justice.

Besides contemporary plays in different Indian languages and participation of folk troupes, a theatre troupe from abroad will also be taking part in the 'Bahuroopi'. Two plays based on the issues of tribes will be staged. Noted director M.S.Sathyu is working on 'Bidirina Vrutha' (a circle of bamboo), which is based on the issue related to forest encroachment. The special feature of this play would be the staging of the play by the Jenu Kurubas, a tribal group, of Heggadadevana Kote, in their dialect. Famous theatre personality Mohan Nagashi with his play "Hum Khel Na Chagethi Hai", Assam's Bhagirathi Bai, who hails from Karnataka, with her troupe and Habib Thanveer with his play on Bhopal's gas tragedy are among those who will take part. Street plays will be an added feature of the festival.

Some of the features of the festival would be a six-day handicrafts exhibition, book exhibition, art exhibition, food festival, seminar and interaction with leading theatre personalities. A three-day international symposium on folk narrative performances is also being organized in collaboration with the Central Institute of Indian Languages.

The Rangayana's open air theatre "Vana Ranga" is being modernized for the festival. It will be equipped with modern facilities. Well-known architect Shashi Bhushan of Mysore is redoing the open air theatre, which will be declared open on January 28 by Chief Minister Mr.S.M.Krishna. The theatre festival will be inaugurated by well-known theatre personality Habib Thanveer. Minister for Kannada and Culture Mrs. Rani Sathish will preside, according to Rangayana Director Prasanna.
