Mysore’s Bishop Rev. Roy Passes Away

Rev. Dr. Joseph Roy, the Bishop of Mysore, is no more. He has died of a massive heart attack.

Rev. Roy, 79, was admitted to the local J.S.S. Hospital on April 18 for treatment of a coronary problem. After treatment, he was showing signs of improvement. However, the next day early morning, his chest pain suddenly rose and soon after he suffered a massive heart attack. Doctors attending on him tried to save him. But, their efforts were of no avail. Dr. Roy had undergone a heart surgery last year.

The body of Rev. Roy was kept for public homage at the city’s famous St. Philomena’s Church the next day. The last rites were performed later at the St. Philomena’s Church. Among those who attended the burial were the Archbishop of Bangalore, Rev. Dr. Ignatius Pinto, and a large number of priests of the Mysore Diocese.

Born in 1925 at Marikuppam in the Kolar Gold Fields, Rev. Roy had served as a priest at several places in the Diocese. He was appointed the Bishop of Mysore on January 17, 1995. He served in that top post in the Mysore Diocese till 2003 when in view of his health he had to leave it.
